Dual purpose buttons

These are fabric-covered buttons with elastic attached and voila.... elastic hair ties :-)
I've had these buttons lying around for a while. I had elastic too but I saw these black ones when I went out for breakfast this morning and thought it'd be fun to attach to my buttons.
Yup, indeed, a simple, quick and fun project.
Make your own fabric-covered buttons with a kit from Daiso. You'll just need some fabric scraps and elastic. I think I'll make more of these soon. Especially with DD keeping her hair long :-)

Canvas laminates

These are the Cath Kidston lookalike material that I have on hand. All are 20cm x 20cm. The larger sized ones will arrive next month and I'm already dreaming of clutches made out of those. DD has also requested for a wallet but I'm out of some items to make the wallet and they'll only arrive next month. October's going to be a fun month of receiving parcels :-)
Anway, I have some of these in duplicates, if you want something larger or two of the same.
Also, I can't make any straps using these but I might be making some out of PU leather (not sure if it'll be strong enough) else out of cow leather (this should be ok) that I think will go well with these.... next month too.
Oh, I won't be updating this so please just let me know your top 3 preferences and I'll check availability.

Have a blessed day!

Charmed!

Oooh! The Faith charms have arrived!
I wasn't expecting them till early next month and I'm so happy that they arrived. It just so happened that I ran out of charms while I was making more shepherd's hook bookmarks but I decided to just do the Byzantine weave anyway so when the doorbell rang, like 15 mins ago, I quickly opened the package, pulled out one and attached it!
I like it that it's super shiny with a clear print of the word 'Faith'. I'm so tempted to buy the other charms available from this shop :-(

Simple florals

This is my last piece of PU leather and snap. I've bought more but it takes so long to arrive that I'm wondering if I'll try to make my own. But that means I'll have to do the snaps myself and the tool for my snaps have yet to arrive, LOL!
Cellphone sleeve made from the Cath Kidston lookalike material. It's a bit like oilcloth, or maybe it really is. Just reminds me of that 'cos of the prints and texture. Lined this with super soft dimpled microfibre. I was thinking of saying that it's large enough to fit DD's Samsung Galaxy Ace but it seems lots of phones are getting larger. To think that someone once laughed at my Nokia e61i.

Plasticky

Bought a stack of plasticky canvas recently. Sure reminds me of Cath Kidston material, in terms of print and feel. It's the thickest material I've sewn. Not the toughest though. That would be faux leather 'cos it wouldn't cooperate with my sewing machine's presser foot and feeder dogs.
I've not quite thought of what I want to make with these yet but made this to try out sewing it. It's so stiff that it's tough to flip proper side out. On the upside, it holds its shape very well. :-)
Simplest item to make was an unlined pencil case. Added a label to the front and a charm to the zipper pull.

Ear candy

I've been wanting to make this for eons. Finally found the right materials and made these. I'm short of 4 more caps for the other 2 fabrics in the jelly roll series. Well, for this jelly roll. I had another jelly roll with 24 different strips of fabric.

Jelly roll series

I decided to concentrate on this range of cottons. After making these, I still have 1 more jelly roll that I forgot about, LOL! These were made with half the width of a jelly roll strip, actually. Narrower than a honey bun strip. Fun to sew, nevertheless. I still have a list of some other items to make but I thought I'd just post this update first.
More details on Facebook!

ps: A jelly roll is made up of strips of fabric 2.5" wide x width of fabric.
pps: I like the drawstring bag the most. It's not interfaced (padded) yet it's not too floppy since the strip of fabric basically doubled up behind so effectively, there are 3 layers of fabric.

Ring, ring!

I forgot to blog about this.
Sometimes I blog first, sometimes I post on Facebook first. For this cellphone pouch, I posted it on Facebook and clean forgot to blog about it here, LOL!
I received a pack of cotton linen recently and this piece was large enough for a cellphone pouch so I decided to make one. It's Hansel and Gretel's candy house. I machine-quilted it and added a leather mounted snap. You can't see from this pic but the inside is white polka dots on green.

Bling on the invaders!

This is my 2nd attempt at sewing with faux leather. I've yet to post a pic of the first item I made and if I get good lighting, I might. It has space invaders on it as well.
I made the pouch in a jiffy 'cos it's unlined. It took me more than an hour to stick the bling on. I've never played space invaders so I didn't know they flap their hands or move or change colours. I didn't know about the canons or shields. No worries that google couldn't fix 'cos I found some patterns online and winged the rest with input from DS. This is his after all.
The first time I tried to stick the bling on canvas with fabric glue, I made a big mess. After I popped it into the washing machine for a test to see if the bits really stuck, well, that was a mess too. I should have put it in a pillow case or something 'cos I had to pick out the bits that fell off. Canvas is a large weave, compared to faux leather. This time I used less glue and waited for more tackiness in the glue before sticking it.
I looped a Mobius flower unto the zipper pull too. Somehow, I find YKK zippers a tad small and inconvenient.
I wonder if I should bling DS' name onto this as well.

Have a blessed day!

ps: I didn't edit this picture so you can see the abuse the faux leather went through yet only 1 bling fell off, or perhaps it was the space invader that shot it off? LOL!

Psalm 23 bookmarks

I didn't know that these bookmarks are called shepherd's hook. Sure reminds me of Psalm 23 after I knew though.
The beaded ones were made with gifted beads from SL. They won't be for sale 'cos she has something planned for them.
But there are more than enough hooks so I'll be making some for sale too :-)

Have a blessed day!

Zippity doo dah

I didn't realise that YKK has so many shades of green. There's at least one more in neon but I didn't want to add that. There're also at least 10 shades of blue. I might just post the pic if I get around to making a similar pouch to this but in blue.
This is DD's. She requested for the zips to be vertical rather than horizontal, or rather perpendicular to the usual way I've been using a zip. She also requested for all the zipper pulls to be on one side and this is actually much easier to sew than having the zips alternating head to tail. Her other request was to have them sewn together in a zigzag manner so that there won't be the puffiness for each zip.
Strangely, she hasn't decided what to put inside this yet. It's the right size for a pencil case but she's still holding on to her bee so I don't know what this will be for.
Sadly, I don't know how to take a proper pic so it represents the actual colour. Some of these zips look blue but they're really all green. Warm and cool shades of green.
What's your favourite colour?

Have a blessed evening!

In a bind

There are times when I'm in a lull and don't know what to sew. Not from lack of ideas but actually from being overwhelmed by so many of them. I look at a piece of fabric and decide, yup, I want to make something but when I cut it, I remember something else and wonder if the piece will fit. So, in these times of indecision, I switch to safer stuff.
Today, I made bias strips from oatmeal linen. This is a go-with-anything bias so it's OK that I made about 5m of it. Maybe I'll go fold paper now. I have so much paper that have yet to be made into books, LOL!

Have a blessed day!

Not my yarn

I was up and about most of this week so I couldn't sit at the sewing table so the next best thing was something portable that I could bring everywhere with me. DS gave me a face when I asked him if he thought I could finish it by the time Total Recall ended. He asked me what if I dropped a stitch in the dark? Anyway, I was just pulling his leg. I prefer popcorn and action. Knitting's probably for TV dramas that I can pause on demand. LOL!
Not for sale 'cos yarn's not mine.
Owner didn't have any inkling what she wanted, as long as it could be used to make something. I suggested a scarf and used my favourite pattern of garter knit on the bias.
Tis a bit odd that I was destashing my yarn a while back and here I am with more yarn. I still have some of mine that I intend to make into something in time. I should be concentrating on clearing mine, no? *grin*
Anyway, hope she likes it!

Have a blessed day!

Dizzying stripes

Two denim totes for DD and me. DS doesn't like stripes.
These are large enough to put A4 files in and with the many pockets (2 large ones in front, 2 large ones back, panel inside), we can carry many stuff around. DD prefer to carry hers without the detachable strap. I prefer mine attached 'cos sometimes I use the over the shoulder straps, sometimes I use the longer one.
I think I'll make more of these if I can find the right thick fabric - canvas or denim. I wonder if oxford will work as well?
Some other design considerations:
flap covers for the outside pockets with the snaps on the flaps
swivel hook on the inside to snap on key rings
zipper pocket
shorter handles for handcarry
zipper closure for main body

Have a blessed day!

Brights!

We were sorting out our zips, trying to sort them into colour zones but there were some that stood out. DD asked for a coin purse made from them. The camera can't represent the colours properly and the colour of these zips are really bright.

Make your own...
Choose 5 8" zips.
Sew them together lengthwise (I chose to sew them alternately head to tail)
Half them and sew the edge (pink and purple in this case)
Sew the other edge close. You might want to hand-sew the open ends together first.
Flip it inside out.
Voila!

Have a blessed day!
