Hugs and kisses

Fuschia kisslock mini purse. Long overdue Christmas present that's becoming a Valentine's day present.
One hot pink purse for one hot mama. Thank you for your patience!
ps: chocolate coins not included....LOL!

Lunching in

What do you do when it rains and rains and it's lunchtime? Well, pack back to eat, else, bring your own lunch.
Two bags meant for bringing lunch from home. Two different sizes. Similar design in that they both have a button closure and 4 pockets inside. FYI, button has been sewn with internal button on the inside so that the fabric won't tear if the outer button is pulled.
Blue and white pinstripe denim with candy stars cotton interior. Large and small bears lined with sunny yellow gingham. Which do you like?

Raining dogs

It's been raining and raining the past few days, sometimes heavily, sometimes so poetically with the drops just fluttering down (this we saw while waiting for the bus to Teen Xcite on Saturday, at Buona Vista). I just thank God that I get to stay indoors most of the time.
It's been a while since the last giveaway so I decided to give this reversible tote away. Base is about 5" x 4" with height of 11" to top of handles. Oxford cotton on both sides with doggy prints on one and white dots on mint on the other.
To stand a chance to win this, you'll have to indicate your interest in one of the following ways:

Happy Lunar New Year!

Wishing everyone abundance of joy, great health and dreams come true!

Recipe: Olive rice

I've not cooked olive rice before but I've eaten my friend's version many times and it's something I don't mind eating everyday for a week. It's a very simple recipe but you may need some effort in finding the olive. This is the salted olive that you'll have to buy from provision shops. Look for those with chinese wordings on the bottle label that say 'salted olive'. I forgot to see the brand that my friend uses but I'll let you know. It's a glass bottle with an orange cap and label.

For each cup of cooked rice, you'll need
  • 7 salted olives cut to tiny bits
  • 4 cloves of garlic cut to tiny bits
  • half teaspoon of sugar
  • minced meat (amount of your choice)
Lightly fry the garlic till the fragrance just starts but the garlic's not turning brown yet. Add the minced meat and then the salted olives. Add the sugar and last of all, add the rice.
Enjoy!

Look what another friend sent me! Thanks so much!

Heavy duty

The thing about buying online is that I have to rely on descriptions. Even then, sometimes I don't know what's the difference between 4oz and 7oz batting, or light-weight and medium-weight webbing, or what it means by 'waterproof'.
Anyway, I bought this medium weight cotton webbing and 4oz batting and decided to sew a tote to test what it's really like and this is what I got:
Yuwa (yup yup!) cotton linen interior and exterior (yup, reversible!) of the same print but of 2 complimentary colours with 4oz interfacing (batting) between and medium weight webbing. I reinforced the straps with 5 passes and then put a 5kg bag of rice inside to test. IMHO, the seams seem ok :-)
I think this is ok for a bag that's 'structured' but not for those, eg. drawstring backpacks, where you need a bit more give in the material else it'll look terrible where it's bunched up, or not have it at all, like in the reversible lunch bags.
Have a blessed day!

Sweet Memories

The body of this tote was made months ago but I couldn't find the right handle to go with it. Until today, when the fabric shipment arrived this afternoon along with these handles.
Made this for my sis out of small pieces of blue fabric. Some of these pieces are smaller than a 5 cent coin. Some are older than DD even.
Have a blessed day!

Simple pleasures

I like olive rice. I like it very much. If you haven't tried this, please do.
The olive is one of the plants most often cited in literature. The leafy branches of the olive tree - the olive leaf as a symbol of abundance, glory and peace - were used to crown the victors of friendly games and bloody wars. Olive oil has long been considered sacred; it was used to anoint kings and athletes in ancient Greece. It was burnt in the sacred lamps of temples as well as being the "eternal flame" of the original Olympic Games. Over the years, the olive has been the symbol of peace, wisdom, glory, fertility, power and pureness. The olive tree and olives are mentioned over 30 times in the Bible, in both the New and Old Testaments. It is one of the first plants mentioned in the Bible, and one of the most significant.

Dimensions : 37cm (L) x 5cm (W) x 31cm (H)
3.2cm (W) x 54cm (handles)
Olive oxford cotton exterior paired with calico lining. Panel of 6 pockets on one side in addition to the waterbottle holder. Strap is medium weight webbing which I sewed over at least 5 times so this bag is sturdy enough to carry all those library books during DEAR season. It's also interfaced to protect any delicate items you may be carrying.
Have a blessed day!

Cornered

Have you ever seen the corner of a tablecloth? Is it mitred or is it just folded over?
I spent a wet day indoors working on 16 mitred corners. Mitred means there's a line at the 45 degree angle at the corner where both sides meet. I like mitred corners for their neatness and they look more appealing than normal foldover 90 degree corners. Anyway, yup, I know, who'll see the corners when the tablecloth's on the table?
I thought of this while making this so I'm sharing with you, from Matthew 6:
1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Take a bow

I confess that there are times when some customization requests are very tedious or difficult to do and I deliberate longer than usual. Procrastinate. However, because of such requests, I'm taken out of my comfort zone and when I do overcome my mountain and sew them, I thank you and I thank God for encouraging me with your orders. I take a bow, in gratitude.
ps: Disclaimer: I still will not take Barbie doll clothes requests. That's Gunung Tahan for me.

Thorns

Extracted from parentingbydesign.com

Prov. 3:12: For whom the Lord loves He reproves, even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights (NASU).

If we look at suffering as something to be avoided, we may miss some of God's greatest work. This passage tells us that some suffering is God's effort to correct us, and His vast love for us allows it.  Suffering can be a sign of God's love!

Suffering also gives us a chance to display God's glory. The apostle Paul had a painful condition he called a "thorn in the flesh." We don't know what it was, but we know it bothered him enough that he prayed for its removal three times. God did not remove the "thorn," and Paul was convinced that his suffering was an advantage to him because it kept him from becoming conceited. God told Paul that Paul's weakness revealed God: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Cor. 12:9 NIV).

When you feel you were not cut out for parenting, remember that when you are weak, God can fill you with His strength. When you rely on your power, there is no room for God.

Dribs and drabs

Sometimes I sew in moods vs FIFO or I'm drawn to the fabric and want to make many different items just out of that 1 piece of fabric. Anyway, I wanted to fulfil a request for a reversible tote this afternoon when I decided to just cut a few more pieces and make 2 more. I need to build up a ready stockpile too. Sharing with you here first.
This is the same design as above but flattened.
Just iron it if you don't like the creases.

Some like it hot, some like it cold

Some like it hot, some like it cold,
Some like it in the pot 9 days old.
Do you like black or white? Large or small dots?
White dots on black oxford on one side with black dots on white canvas on the other. Which side do you like more? The black background has a classic Audrey Hepburn kind of feel (at least to moi) while the other side's a bit more fun.
Have a blessed day!

Paint the town red

Do you know how many shades of red there are? If you like it fire engine red, perhaps this is the one for you?
Made this though no one requested in particular, but in response to the comments in the facebook entry for the first CNY mandarin orange carrier. Almost the same design in that there is a drawstring closure with 2 pockets for angpows. Lining is same print but in peanut colour. Lots of peanuts during CNY, no? LOL! Difference other than print is that the drawstring is not cotton cord but made of same fabric as exterior. I don't know about size 'cos I don't have a template but I think this will fit 6 mandarins?
This is going at a special rate of S$15 (including local shipping). SOLD!
If you'd like this one, leave a comment at the shoutbox on the left or a comment on facebook. I'll check at noon tomorrow and if there's only 1 person interested in this, I'll sell it to you :-) If there are more, I'll do the random.org to help me select who to sell to.
ps: DD prefers this one.
pps: forgot to add that if no one wants this, it'll be what we're using this CNY... LOL!

Roses are red

Red is the most auspicious colour for CNY, no? Next to orange and gold. Bright colours too. This CNY mandarin orange carrier has it all. Myriad of colourful flowers with gold accents. Drawstring top so that the mandarins don't roll out and 2 pockets inside (incoming and outgoing). Stress points have been reinforced to carry up to 8 mandarins I think.
Have a prosperous and blessed CNY!

Proof

Extracted from parentingbydesign.com

2 Thes. 2:13: But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth (NIV).

We do not always know how faithful we are until we are tested. Trials have a way of exposing those areas where we are trusting in ourselves instead of relying on God. Paul encouraged these believers by showing them the value of God's sanctifying work in their lives.

The purpose in sanctification isn't to reveal a person's heart to God. He already knows! Rather, it is to reveal the heart to the person himself. This can be painful at times as we are confronted with the depths of our sin and challenged to mature spiritually

Pray for God to expose the "logs" in your eyes and the strength to embrace the sanctification process. Difficult times provide an opportunity to become more Christ-like and to be a humble example for our family.

Trials expose our weaknesses and challenge us to grow spiritually.

Pretty in pink

Another wet bag, this time the waterproof layer's on the outside. Fully lined with pink gingham checks with a simple strap at the side.

On dry ground

Finally made a wet bag though I had the materials since last year. Exterior is a soft cotton and interior is 100% polyester which is waterproof. Not interfaced.
Do you think the waterproof layer should be inside or on the outside or on both sides?
Have a blessed day!

Not red enough?

No, this is not a mandarin orange carrier for Chinese New Year though you certainly can use it as such. It's strong enough to hold up to 6 large mandarins since this reversible tote is made out of red denim and ivory Yuwa cotton linen on the other. Fully lined, in a sense. Not interfaced 'cos it's sturdy enough to stand on its own when I took the pics.
Here's another, made from Yuwa cotton linen (did I tell you I like Yuwa??!!) and corduroy. Which do you prefer? The orange background is my throw. Knitted from some synthetic material diagonally in garter stitches. Very comfy when the weather's cold 'cos it's super soft.
Have a blessed day!
ps: no pockets to keep the angpows!

Stewardship

Extracted from parentingbydesign.com

Luke 12:42: "Who then is the faithful and sensible steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time?" (NAS).

God gave you children, and you are expected to raise them for His glory. You are a steward of God's children and, as a steward, you must answer to your Master for your efforts. Fortunately, you don't have to account to other masters, other stewards, or to those under your care. Ultimately, only God has the authority to judge your work.

That's great news! You don't have to answer to other parents or the culture you live in. The competition is over! You are not required to conform to the world's view of success because the world is not your master. And, when your kids are upset with you for restricting or disciplining them, you can take comfort that their approval is not your goal.

That doesn't mean you have carte blanche to treat your kids any way you want; your Master has provided instructions about your relationships with your kids (see Eph 6:4), but it does mean that you should be seeking to please Him first.

Be a faithful and sensible steward of your kids.

What do you eat during recess?

DD brings a fragrant pear everyday (when I remember to buy...LOL) but DS doesn't. He prefers to spend his time kicking the soccer ball in the school field with his friends than eat.

Zippered pouch with tissue case on one side or tissue case with zip compartment on one side. Which is better? Oxford cotton exterior with fully lined zipper compartment using calico. Comes with D-ring for attachment to a spring or strap so that this won't be lost when running around during recess.
Exterior and interior both made of quilting-weight cotton. Also fully lined and interfaced.
Bunny's Day Out exterior with super combed cotton on the other side. Fully lined with calico.

Kitty Chronicle exterior with super combed cotton lining.

Do you doodle?

DD likes to journal. More during the holidays when there are lots of activities, less during term time. Sometimes she even brings her journal along with her wherever she goes. I've even seen tickets stubs and receipts stuck inside some pages before.
What memories would you like to keep?
This is a long overdue request 'cos I was experimenting ways to sew this notebook cover with medium weight oxford cotton and full lining and yet without bulky seams. Also, I did away with the snaps 'cos I didn't like the thought of a picture drawn on the notebook being distorted 'cos of the snap button. Included a small pocket for all the ticket stubs and receipts. A5 size notebook with no lines included, else, what's a cover for? LOL!
Have a blessed day!

Double screen

Took a break from sewing orders to make DD her NDSL case.
Oxford cotton exterior which just arrived this morning from Korea with quilting cotton interior from Spotlight. Padded it, of course, to protect the NDSL. Added an eyelet for the earphones.
It's another mishmash of colours if you've not realized. The eyelet's in gold but the D-ring is silver and the snap button's a darker grey. Again, if DD is happy, why not :-)
Have a blessed day!

Before and after

Do you like before and after pictures of something spruced up?
I found these cord ends yesterday. Fun to use and DD said they look like bunny ears when the cordstopper is pulled near them. Sadly, I only have black ones but DD wanted them for her bag nonetheless. White cord, grey cordstopper and black cord ends. Well, if she's happy, why not :-)
Have a blessed day!

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Bless you!

I'm undecided whether to include the batting so that this fully-lined tissue case is puffy even when empty. After all, the exterior is oxford cotton which is of medium weight and if there's a packet of tissue inside, it'll be puffy anyway. What do you think?

Instant Gratification

Extracted from parentingbydesign.com

Gen. 25:34: Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright (NIV).

One of the best examples of the danger of instant gratification is this familiar Bible story. Esau was hungry after a long day of hunting, and he couldn't wait for dinner. He smelled Jacob's stew and he had to have it-right away! Jacob seized the advantage and demanded Esau's birthright in exchange for that single bowl of stew. Esau couldn't control his craving long enough to resist Jacob's trap, and he fell right into it. He lost the birthright and Jacob became the father of the nation of Israel.

This is a great story to share with our kids because it illustrates the danger of grabbing satisfaction today at the expense of a much greater tomorrow. Help your kids see how instant gratification can have negative eternal consequences.

Going green

What's your part in going green? I'm thankful that the recycling company in our neighbourbood is so diligent in the fortnightly pickups, even on public holidays. In goes the plastic bottles and milk powder tins and boxes and plastic wrapping and almost anything that isn't perishable.
How about this for your effort in reducing, reusing and recycling?
Lunch box carrier that will the use of eliminate plastic bags, definitely reusable and can be recycled to put other stuff besides the lunch box. Oh, and it's made of easy-care cotton too!
Have a blessed day!
ps: tupperware not included hor :-)

Toby is blessed by God

I knew that Tobias is 'God is Great' but I didn't know that Toby is 'Blessed by God'. Do you know the meaning of your name?
Reversible pet bed for Toby the Maltese. One side is what I call Ribena blessings and the other side is Noah's ark from Yuwa Live Life collection. Padded with 7oz padding and then stuffed with resilient Crest-A-Lon fibre filling which should all be washable. Hopefully it dries fast in this weather :-)
Have a blessed day!

A rose by any other name

The basic drawstring bag. What do you use this for? A ballet shoe bag, a Hot Wheels toy car collection bag, a goody bag or laundry bag? There must be multiple uses for this versatile bag.
There are 2 drawstring bags here. Can you see the smaller upon the larger in the pics on the left? I was trying to see if I could match the trains on the fabric. Made from the rest of the Thomas fabric. All 1m of it used up for the Thomas backpack earlier and these 2. Unlined so they can be washed and dried quickly.
Have a blessed day!
ps: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Mary, Mary quite contrary

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.
This is the 2nd set of babycot bedsheet and pillow made from bright and cheery floral flannel supplied by Bel's mum. Changed the method of seaming at the corners so that the fabric will not bulk up at the edge.
Sweet dreams, dearie!

His sheep am I

This looks so much like a previous one I made last year. Only difference is in the interior where there's a water bottle pocket.
Oxford cotton exterior of families of sheep. Panel of pockets of different sizes across one side and the water bottle pocket at one side. I've included a bottle, file and textbooks for a feel of the size. Bag doesn't come with these... LOL!
Have a blessed day!

Breaking the sound barrier

Some students wear their PE attire to school on days when they have PE. DS has to bring his to school to change so I decided to make one for him to store the PE attire 'cos his previous one had teddy bears which isn't so suitable in secondary school, ya?. He chose this cotton twill from Spotlight which we bought for a really great price during the massive sale just past. Light blue cotton cord and black cordstopper.

Look what I found

Found these just now when I was spring cleaning for CNY - badges that I bought last year (or was it the year before... LOL) from Precious Thoughts. Can't even remember the price. They're about 6.5cm in diameter, not rusty though and the colours are brighter than the pic.
I'll include 1 badge of your request when you place a new order with me from today, FOC. Only these 5 available so first come, first served.
Available: I thank the Lord for you
Available: Pray continually, give thanks
Available: Praise the Lord
Available: The Lord bless and keep you
Available: Trust in the Lord

No dirty laundry here

Both DS and DD have lots of camps in school and church. Whenever they (mostly DD rather than DS) pack, they'll use a laundry bag to keep the clean clothes. DD had a smaller one made from Hello Kitty cloth but she wanted a larger one and chose this green flowers and leaves cotton fabric for her new laundry bag.
Made from less than 2 fat quarters that I bought from Spotlight. White acrylic cord drawstring with gray plastic cordstopper. Unlined 'cos I didn't think there was a need for a lining and besides it's easier to wash. (I just dump the clothes out and drop the laundry bag in the washing machine). Exposed seams have been pinked so that fraying is minimised.
Have a blessed day (even if it's been raining and raining)!

Seeing red

Keiko Goke exterior with cotton interior. 2 internal pockets to hold angpows meant for family and other for friends? Main section would be for all the angpows collected... LOL!
Have a blessed CNY!

Giveaway

Did you get a bag organizer as a Christmas gift or from the shopping mall recently? Does it fit your bag? I got one from my Sis few months back. It's very useful, with lots of pockets, big and small, that you can put all kinds of stuff. With small handles that let you lift the whole thing from one bag to another. DD has one when we bought milk powder at Guardian which is bright orange.
Anyway, what do you do with it if your bag organizer doesn't fit your bag? Use this!
Yuwa oxford exterior with cotton interior. 2 pockets inside, if you choose not to use the bag organizer with this.
All you have to do is to be a fan of my facebook page. Click here to see the page and click on the Like button at the top of the page.
Draw will be on 17 14 Jan at noon. Free local shipping.

Balancing your load

I've made backpacks for DS and DD but this is the first one that I've made as a customized order. Do you like it?
Thomas exterior from Spotlight with calico interior. Straps are blue on the inside 'cos they've been reinforced with canvas. Metal tri-glide and oval ring (forgot to put a pic, sorry). Reinforced base and straps (at least 4 passes). Inside pockets - 2 large ones, 5 smaller ones and a zipped pocket (the blue line that you see at the bottom corner). Since one of the requirements is not to use drawstring closure (which I normally use), I've included 2 magnets at the side for closure and 2 more for the flap. Fully lined and interfaced.

Seven

What's the significance of seven in the bible?

Extracted from http://www.biblestudy.org/ :
As a number the actual word and number "Seven" is used as no other number is. Seven and its compounds occur in multiples of seven in the Old Testament.
  • Seven occurs 287 times, or 7 x 41.
  • "Seventh," the fractional part, occurs 98 times, or 7 x 14.
  • "Seven-fold," occurs 7 times.
  • The above three numbers together are of course a multiple of seven, but a very remarkable one, 287 + 98 + 7 = 392, and 392 is 72 + 73, or 8 times the square of seven (72x8).
  • Then again seven, in combination with other numbers, is remarkable, such as Fifty and seven, a Hundred and seven, etc. There are 112 of these combinations, or 7 x 16.
  • "Seventy" occurs 56 times, or 7 x 8.
  • "Seventy," in combination with other numbers, occurs 35 times, or 7 x 5.
It is, however, when we come to consider its significance that the true glories of its spiritual perfection are revealed.
7 wristlets brings the total number of requested wristlets equal that of triangle-sided pencil cases which means these 2 now tie for top place of most requested items.
Thank you all for your support and have a blessed day!

Important recall notice

RECALL NOTICE:

The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart.
This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been technically termed "Sub-sequential Internal Non-Morality," or more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed.

Some of the symptoms include
:

2. Foul vocal emissions
3. Amnesia of origin
4. Lack of peace and joy
5. Selfish or violent behavior
6. Depression or confusion in the mental component
7. Fearfulness
8. Idolatry
9. Rebellion

The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory-authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this defect.

The Repair Technician, JESUS, has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required.

The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R.
Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus, into the heart component.

No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with:

1. Love
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Kindness

DANGER: The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped in the furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter Heaven so as to prevent contamination of that facility. Thank you for your attention!

- GOD

P.S. Please assist where possible by notifying others of this important recall notice, and you may contact the Father any time by 'Knee mail'!

Because He Lives!

POLL: Closed or open?

Which do you prefer, closed or open pineapple tarts? DS likes open ones, DD likes closed ones, I like pineapple tarts. I like these from my friend who's making them this year.
I tried some this year! Soft buttery exterior that crumbles easily, filled with pineapple and fruit peel, or at least that's what I think it is. I like pineapple tarts tangy and these are certainly it!

Or if you like something crunchier that's a hit with younger ones, try these. With nuts and raisins.

Sowing the seeds of love

A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Where and what seeds are you sowing?
Have a blessed day!

Get your sparkle on

Bel's mum doesn't believe me that she'll have to learn Barbie movie soundtracks or Hi-5 song actions. Don't blame her, Bel's only 7 months old. She'll be watching Baby Einstein perhaps? Anyway, just in case, click here for Barbie Fashion Fairytale's Life Is A Fairytale and Get Your Sparkle On in youtube.
Babycot fitted sheet made from fabric that Bel's mum bought. Elasticised all round so that it's fitted and won't shift when Bel does.
